Northland's History, Values and Vision

A Humble Beginning

In March of 1979, Northland Lutheran High School formed an association and called an administrator (John Schultz) and two teachers.  Freshman and Sophomore classes were established, and classes began that September.  Northland Lutheran High School used temporary relocatable buildings for classrooms and started in Merrill, Wisconsin.

Northland Relocates

Northland Lutheran High School relocated to a temporary facility in Wausau in 1987. A building owned by St. Mary Catholic Church of Wausau would be our home for many years to come. It was a very old building and not very impressive from the outside, but it was a school – our school for the next eleven years. It was a good home with a good landlord.

A Permanent Ministry

On August 22, 1999, Northland dedicated its first permanent facility.  God blessed our school with a new building, room for sporting facilities, and future expansion in Kronenwetter, Wisconsin, just south of Wausau.  Enrollment has grown in recent years to the 2024-25 school year enrollment of 123 students.  Over the years, students have traveled daily from Neillsville, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Plover, Birnamwood, Tomahawk, Eagle River, Rhinelander, Merrill, Medford, Athens, Marathon, Wautoma, Waupaca, as well as the greater Wausau area.  Throughout its entire existence, God has blessed Northland Lutheran High School in its ministry to students and families as we prepare all students for this life and eternity through premier Christ-centered education.

  • Equipping all students with commitment, purpose, and a willingness to serve the Lord—whether as called workers in the church or as dedicated laity.
  • Encouraging students to pursue full-time ministry in teaching, preaching, or staff roles within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
  • Purposefully teaching Christian character and leadership skills, preparing students to be Christian leaders in their schools, families, churches, communities, workplaces, and in sharing God’s Word.
  • Using academic studies to properly and effectively prepare students whose goals include post-secondary education.
  • Guiding students to glorify Christ and love others, living lives of service compelled by His love.

Northland in the Community

Northland Lutheran High School is located in Kronenwetter, a suburb just south of Wausau, and we are proud to call central Wisconsin home! Our school is deeply connected to the community and actively participates in making a difference.

We have a strong relationship with the Village of Kronenwetter and the Kronenwetter Police and Fire Departments. On Christian Servant Leadership Day, our students go out into the community to volunteer and support local organizations as a way of saying “thank you.”

Each year, we host our Homecoming 5K Run/Walk in late September and, during Advent, we present “Journey to Bethlehem”—a winter walk sharing the nativity story with those who need to hear about the birth of Jesus.

Beyond these events, our facilities serve the community in many ways:

Local volleyball leagues, sports trainers, and youth sports teams use our gymnasiums and athletic fields.
We host community blood drives, sing at local churches, and run youth sports camps—just a few ways we give back and welcome others to Northland.

Being a good neighbor is important to us, and we look forward to seeing you in the community or welcoming you to our school!

Non-Discriminatory Policy

Northland Lutheran High School admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic programs, or any other school-administered programs.
